Тувинское горловое пение

Huun-Huur-Tu • Tuesday, January 31 • 7:30 PM Overture center $25 • $20

http://www.overturecenter.com/Performances.../huunhuurtu.htm

---------------------
The remote region of Tuva, one of the new countries formed with the dissolution of the U.S.S.R., has produced one of the world's most unusual vocal groups, Huun-Huur-Tu. Masters of the throat singing style of xoomei, in which a vocalist produces two or three notes simultaneously, the group has been warmly by an international following. According to Jazz Times, "a rustic joyousness and unadulterated expresiveness come out of these musicians". Analyzing Huun-Huur-Tu's music, The Chicago Tribune, wrote, 'it is unfamiliar yet very accessible, an other-worldly but deeply spiritual music that is rooted in the sound of nature". Dirty Linen took a similar view, claiming, "this music is both very spiritual and down to earth, grounded in a strong sense of place, yet its appeal is universal." In addition to recording their own albums, the members of Huun-Huur-Tu have contributed their unique vocals to albums and/or performances by Frank Zappa, The Chieftains, Johnny "Guitar" Watson, The Kronos Quartet and L. Shankar and Ry Cooder's soundtrack of the film, Geronimo. Their on-going collaboration with Angelite, the Bulgarian Woman's Choir under the direction of Mikhail Alperin, has yielded two memorable albums — Fly, Fly My Sadness in 1994 and Mountain Tale in 1998. Although its name translates literally as "sun propeller", Huun-Huur-Tu represents much more. In a 1994 interview, founding percussionist Alexander Bapa explained, "(the name of the band refers to) the vertical seperation of light rays that are often seen on the grasslands just after sunrise or just before sunset". Initially named "Kungurtuk", Huun-Huur-Tu came together, in 1992, to play "the old and forgotten songs". Founding members Sasha and Sayan Bapa and Kaigalool Khovalyg had previously performed a state-sanctioned ensemble during the Soviet regime. Although Tuvan music had traditionally been performed by a solo singer or instrumentalist, the group sound of Huun-Huur-Tu set them apart. Huun-Huur-Tu has experienced several personnel changes. Original member Anatoli Kuular left to form a new band, Yat-Kha, in late 1993, and was replaced by Anatoli Kuular, a master of the borbangnadyr style of singing and a virtuosic player of the mouth harp (xomuz) and byzanchi. Percussionist Alexander Bapa left, in 1995, to become a producer in Moscow, and was replaced by Alexander Siraglar, a sygyt singer, string player and precussionist.

Klezmer is Yiddish folk music, music for dancing and celebrating
The Klezmatics take one of the wildest approaches to klezmer, the traditional dance music of the eastern European Jews. Although their music is heavily influenced by the recordings of Abe Ellstein and Dave Tarras in the 1940s and 1950s, their lyrics comment on a wide variety of political and social issues and have led the group to be labeled, “the planet's radical Jewish roots band."

В прошлую субботу состоялся концерт мой группы EREBUS в месте The Loft, что на Washington Ave.

High Noon Saloon
Thu. October 11 Silver Wrapper presents

Bassnectar
Eliot Lipp

---------------------

9:30 PM / $10 cover
18 AND UP

AT THIS TIME, ADVANCE TICKETS ARE AVAILABLE ONLINE ONLY. Bassnectar's enormous popularity reflects the current hunger for raw substance in modern music and a desire for social integrity inside the party scene. 2005 saw the debut of Bassnectar's double-disc collection entitled "Mesmerizing The Ultra," a journey through next-level musical mutations, dreamy dubtempo, massive bass lines, heavy sledgehammer beats, head-nodding hip-hop, and a wild assortment of unlikely collaborations; remixing and producing with such artists as the enigmatic and mysterious Buckethead, the jam band super group Sound Tribe Sector 9, cult bluegrass rock star Michael Kang (String Cheese Incident), roots musical activists like Michael Franti (Spearhead), Heavyweight Dub Champion and KRS One, and dubstep/breakbeat pioneer FreQ Nasty. Both critically acclaimed and voraciously consumed, the record helped define the current sound of the West Coast Underground. Opener Eliot Lipp is a G-funk-gone-Eurocrunk Hip-Hop producer who creates infectious instrumental jams that stand up to both the scrutiny of a music critic and the exuberance of a packed dance floor.

Sun. October 14 Deadbeat Productions presents

группы таакого калибра заежают к нам нечасто!

Assemblage 23
Sensuous Enemy
Breath and Decay

9:00 PM / $14 cover $12 Advance 18 AND UP, $2 surcharge 18-20 , if purchased online and under 21 be prepared to pay surcharge at the door
In the studio, Assemblage 23 is simply Seattle native Tom Shear, although he brings a few backing musicians with him on for live performances. Shear's project is lauded for crossing boundaries between industrial and synthpop, using elements of both but belonging exclusively to neither genre. Combined with Shear's thoughtful, personal, dark lyrics, the result is something like a harsher, more industrial-sounding Depeche Mode. Sensuous Enemy is a Madison band that incorporates live drums and guitar into their gothic, electronically-driven synth/dance music, while also providing a feast for the eyes with dancers and other imagery. Breath and Decay open the show with their brand of industrial techno.

Thu. October 18 High Noon Saloon and WORT presents

Eyedea & Abilities

absolutely awesome cutting-egde hip-hop and turntablism/scratch!

9:00 PM / $15 cover 18 AND UP, $17 for ages 18-20, if ticket purchased online and under 21 be prepared to pay $2 at door
Eyedea and Abilities is what you get when you combine the very best of two opposite ends of Hip-Hop’s musical spectrum. On one end you have the M.C./Lyricist, Eyedea, who has proven himself time and time again not only as an extraordinary song writer, but also as a master at battling and the art of freestyling. On the other end you have Abilities, the D.J./Turntablist, whose talent from the battle, to the mix tape, to production has resonated in the underground for quite some time now. When you put these two extremes together, you get the new, innovative and exciting dynamic called E&A. Also performing will be Madison homeboys The Crest, who have been rockin' the mic and keepin' it real since 1997. Their Mid-West vibe and everyday feel has won them a national fanbase. Minneapolis/St. Paul-based rappers Carnage and Concentr8 will also perform.

Bukue One
Junk Science feat. Iller than theirs

8:00 PM / $20 cover $18 Advance 18 AND UP
Hailing from Oakland, California, Del and his crew, the Hieroglyphics came out as a markedly non-gansta response to a burgeoning West Coast scene. After being put on at the tender age of 17 by his cousin Ice Cube, Del released two records on Elektra, I Wish My Brother George Was Here (1991) and No Need For Alarm (1993). The Hieroglyphics then broke away from Elektra, but have continued to release their work independently. Del has kept himself busy in a variety of other ways, with solo work and a variety of high-profile collaborations, most notably including his team-up with Blur's Damon Albarn in the smash-hit cartoon rap group Gorillaz. No need to say more about Del: he is one funky dude, and this show will be huge. There are three opening acts: Devin the Dude, from Texas, will be performing with his crew, the Coughee Brothaz. Devin is known as the "Richard Pryor of Hip-Hop" owing to his combination of humor and cutting social commentary. Aside from his own crew and solo work, Devin also appeared on Dre's Chronic 2001 album, and has guested on albums by De La Soul, Raphael Saddiq, Nas, Jay-Z. Bukue-One, from Oakland, is on a mission to introduce good old party hip-hop to the young kids. Opening the show will be Junk Science feat. Iller than Theirs, part of the NYC's Nuclear Family collective.

Idan Raichel is a 29-year old keyboardist, producer and composer of Eastern European roots. Attracted to the sounds of Gypsy music, tango and jazz, he started playing the accordion when he was nine years old. As a young adult, he was a counselor at a boarding school, meeting immigrant youth from Ethiopia and getting familiar with their culture and folk and pop music.

His first album, produced with musicians of Ethiopian, Yemenite and Sephardic descent, was an immediate hit in Israel and live shows and a second album followed. 09.20-21 Sat-Sun Williamson Street Fair 5 stages FREE
http://www.cwd.org/community/wsf/wsf.aspx
see excellent ethno-lineup crossposted with World Music Fest
otherwise Sunday 3-4 sounds like a good time to hang out there..
---------------------------------
09.21 Sun see front page our own Mikhail Scherbakov
----------------------------------
09.27 Sat Majestic DJ Q-bert  — epochal DJ event in Madison, king of scratch, multiple

winner of DMC championship etc etc!!! Quite possibly, the best turntablist on the

planet now. An absolute must-see of all DJs, hip-hop (I didn' say gangsta crap, did I?) and

club fans
-------------------------------
09.27 Sat Memorial Union Terrace FREE. Tortoise. How many times you have seen

artists who basically start the whole new stream in music? Tortoise, with their pensive

jazzy instrumentals spiced with electronica practically DEFINED post-rock. You'll shrivel

and die in disgust at yourself long before you'll have to tell your grandchildren you had a

chance to see them live for FREE and missed..
----------------------------
09.27 Sat Frequency Reptile Palace Orchestra, Genneya Bellydancers. Gonna miss the

expert Balkan gypsy funk and the ladies for other events on that impossible Saturday, but

watch out for their other dates, definitely. They are some of the best long-running

muscanship-oriented projects around Madison, you will NEVER be disappointed. Heck, a

genetics professor who taught a part of my class played with them.. :-) They could use a

better vocalist, IMHO, though..

oh, and Genneya has classes, too..
----------------------
10.04 Thr High Noon. Screamin' Cyn Cyn and the Pons, Mathematicians. Two really funny

live bands: <ahem> screaming bouncy punk and screaming bouncy punk synthpopunk

(they remind me of sweet glory days of Men or Astromen?..anyone?). Body-shaved gay

psychotic Winnie-the-Pooh and scary robotic freaks with a global destruction fetish?

Sounds like a good chance to meet madisonian indie crowd... ;-)

10.11 Sat Memorial Union Theater Broken Socal Scene
colossally popular experimental indie pranksters

-------------------------
10.18 Sat Majestic DJ Rekha. Bhangra is an infectious mix of India singing/melodies (and

occasional rapping!) and club beats. Think not funny Bollywood (remember "Tancor

Disko?") but London, rather. She is reportedly an expert here in the US. Second Madison

appearance.
----------------------
10.23 Thurs Majestic Lotus
decent stoney trance rock somewhere between Spiritualized and Ozric Tentacles
www.myspace.com/lotusvibes
-------------------------
10.28 Tue Majestic World/Inferno Friendship society
decent ska/punk
